The Opening Ceremony of Iskandar Jalil: In Pursuit of the Ethical Pot exhibition at Japan Creative Centre (JCC) was held on 26 August 2015 with an overwhelming response of 150 guests turning up for the event. Prof Tommy Koh, Ambassador-at-Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Singapore and Mrs Koh graced the event as the Guest-of-Honour, together with His Excellency Ambassador Haruhisa Takeuchi and Madam Takeuchi.

Ranging from pots to ceramic sculptures with a total of 89 previous and latest pottery works showcased, this was Mr Iskandar Jalil’s second solo exhibition at JCC, one of Singapore’s renowned Master Potters who has been interacting with the art of pottery across the globe, including Japan, Finland and Southeast Asia. As mentioned in one of his interviews, this exhibition explores the potter’s relentless pursuit of ‘the ultimate pot’. For the Master Potter, the ideal pot emerges not just from the mastery of techniques, but also involves the aesthetics, values, identity and life experiences of the potter.

During the opening, guests had the first-hand opportunity to witness and understand the vision, inspiration and experience of Mr Iskandar Jalil through his extraordinary breadth of stories, philosophies and experiences behind the clay. The Master Potter took the chance as well to express his gratitude by presenting a token of appreciation to Prof Tommy Koh, His Excellency Ambassador Haruhisa Takeuchi and curator Ms Lindy Poh, for their unwavering support towards him and the development of the pottery art in Singapore all these years.

Earlier this year, the Master Potter was conferred the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette in the name of the Emperor of Japan in April 2015 and was recently mentioned by Singapore Prime Minister Mr Lee Hsien Loong during this year’s National Day Rally speech. According to him, this would be his last and final solo exhibition, but he will continue to do pottery, which is his love and passion, as long as he can.
